Contact Improvisation inspired by martial arts
Martial arts, especially Aikido, was an important source to develope CI in the early days. At some point we three teachers realized that all three of us have our own very specific martial arts background: Sebas - Aikido, Daniel - Karate & Chi Gong, Joerg - Capoeira ... and that our CI practice benefits from it. We see that all three/four forms have similarities, which also connects them to CI: a strong groundedness, a strong center as a main organizer of movement; a connection to a partner center to center (through space or via peripherie), a sense of leading and following or initiating and reacting and redirecting, a highly developed readyness based on an inner calmness...
In this workshop we want to introduce some of the named martial arts concepts and use them in ways we found to be inspiring and supportive for CI. On the other hand we want to counterbalance the material by feeding in what is essential for CI but very different from martial arts like ideas around opening, widening and softening, the trust in giving and taking weight, the ability to follow and surrender, the art of braking rules, the delight of making mistakes, the awareness of the whole group...
Experience in martial arts is not necessary to follow this workshop, a basic knowledge about CI is demanded though.
